At the end of last month, I had the awesome opportunity to ride with two of my fellow Charm3d Moto Sisters from Huntsville, Alabama in the Nashville Pride Parade. We joined about 20 other amazing ladies from the Nashville area for the ride on Saturday, June 25th. I rode the 600 Honda Shadow (Rizzo) since the parade required riding at 3mph with a lot of stopping and starting. There was no way I would be able to do that on my SV650 with only one leg able to touch the ground (at least not yet!). Plus, Rizzo is purple, the perfect color for a Pride parade!!
I would like to share why I have been wanting to ride in a Pride Parade and show my support as an ally for a long time. First, my father is gay. He has been out since I was in 9th grade and we have a great relationship. I just can’t help but feel special to have this unique relationship with my dad and would like to show my support! I should mention that my dad also rides and is a real petite guy (5’3”)!
Second, one of my closest friends in veterinary school, who was bisexual, took her own life several years ago. I loved her so much and miss her every single day. She also loved motorcycles and wanted to learn to ride someday. Every time I think of a pride parade since, and the act of riding a motorcycle in one, I can’t help but feel closer to her. And that I’m doing something she would be proud of.
I know this post got heavy, but we all have stories and people in our lives who change us. These women I spent the weekend with are amazing, caring, and supportive souls. I am so proud that we were able to get out there and show our support for the LBTQ+ community. When you have to think about an escape route because of current/past violence at these type of events, our support matters more than ever. I hope we do it again next year!
